Atmosmancer (Greek atmos, vapor + Greek mantis, prophet), is a sensing structure that takes real-time measurements of environmental factors around it and translates these into sound streams shaping a generative composition. The ritual of atmosmancy is played as the day cycles through, and plants breath, light waxes and wanes, and the pollutants from the city flow by. As only a few variations of the atmosphere in which we are plunged are perceptible to us, the sound textures and events generated are a sonification (the displaying of data as sound) that make possible an augmented awareness of that which surround us. The mediated immediacy provided by this mantic practice asks two questions to the listener: “How fresh is the air your breathing and listening? Why?”
